Mel's Responds to Sestak Challenge

On August 9, shortly before State offices in Harrisburg closed, Joe Sestak, Democratic Party candidate for US Senate in PA, filed a formal challenge to my election petitions for that same office. This was not unexpected and given the absurd requirements that third-party candidates must meet to attain ballot status, his challenge will likely be successful and I will lose my already state-certified ballot status for that position.  Read more

Statement to EPA on Fracking

For the last few weeks, I have been astounded to hear from many of my fellow citizens who can no longer drink the water from their once clean wells, sleep at night due to the noise and light from drilling operations, let their children play on their own farms because of the danger of nearby frack ponds, and in some cases, not even able to live on their land now that drilling operations have started on neighbors land.  Read more

LGBT position paper, Mel Packer, 5/26/10

For far too long now, many of our fellow citizens have become convinced that those who have a life-style that does not conform to the traditional concept of marriage between a man and a woman is a great threat and must be opposed.

The notion that our gay or lesbian neighbors living down the street are a greater threat to our futures than the corporations that have given us tens of millions unemployed, other millions declaring bankruptcy due to medical bills, home repossessions/foreclosures at a record rate, and wars without end does, frankly, defy logic and reason.

The individual who chooses to dress "differently" or chooses as a partner a member of the same gender, or one who decides that the gender one is born into is not his/her natural or preferred gender, is a threat to no one.  Read more

Environment

ENVIRONMENT POSITION, Mel Packer 5/26/10

As a nation, we in the US currently consume 25-30% of the world's energy resources while being only 5% of the world population.

Now, every day of our lives, we wake to find ourselves in ever increasing ecological disasters that threaten our children's futures and the very existence of our planet as we now know it.

We have depended for far too long on non-renewable, carbon-based energy sources that continue to harm our planet and endanger our lives.

Energy companies continue to rent or buy most of our elected leaders in an effort to persuade us that we can continue to plunder the earth for new oil, coal, and gas deposits as those companies make ever-increasing profits.

The Gulf of Mexico becomes an oil-soaked bathtub destroying the land and water and the lives of millions who live and work around it.  Read more

HOUSING POSITION PAPER, 3/5/10

As of March, 2010, we continue to have a mortgage foreclosure rate of approximately 300,000 units a month with no end in sight.

Despite the claims of a “recovery” and despite the tax-payer funded bailouts of banks and investment firms there is scant evidence that there is any concentrated effort that will enable many hard working families to stay in their homes.

The landscape of our communities has become littered with repossessed homes which continue to destroy the social and economic glue that holds our neighborhoods together.

The banksters who created this human disaster, and were, unlike the homeowners, bailed out with taxpayers money cannot possibly use or sell these homes and show no interest in renting them out. And so these homes too often become broken down or vandalized and decrease the tax base and social fabric of our communities.

Statement on Election Financing

I have opposed the current method of funding elections for as long as I can remember because I believe it is inherently un-democratic and only serves to keep those who have power in the seat of power. It also enables those with big money connection to corporations to purchase far more media coverage than those candidates not blessed by the special interests. The Fair Elections Now Act is a step in the right direction as it will provide for some funding for those who are not supported by rich donors and I support its passage. However, if we are to have true democracy in our nation, eventually ALL elections should be publicly financed while private funding should be barred completely and every candidate who can demonstrate reasonable support would have equal access to media outlets.

Mel Packer, Green Party candidate for US Senate in PA.
